My "happy hats" are created with all natural fibers. I love color, texture, design, and a hat that is one of a kind. My daughter, Rachel says I like to "trick out" my hats. Each hat is 100% green. The base is pure Merino wool roving. They are embellished with other wools: alpaca, lamb curls, recycled sari silk, silk hankies and a variety of yarns including bamboo. They are very water resistant, fun, and comfortable to wear. Some of them are adorned with leather flowers created by my husband, Dean.
The hats are labor intensive and made entirely by hand. I use barbed felting needles, a foam form, bubble wrap, an exercise ball, an old fashioned wash board, and a rolling pin to make each hat.
The joy I experience as I create each unique hat is indescribable. I enjoy the whole process: from choosing the colors, embellishments, wet felting, and to the final step of shaping it. The process is a truly sensory experience, from the sight and sound, to the touch and feel of the raw wool as it becomes a finished felt product.
